2008 Chester County Green Business Award Winners

The Chester County Board of Commissioners, through the Chester County Solid Waste Authority and the Chester County Chamber of Business and Industry, recognizedAll4 Inc.and Dansko, Inc. withthe 2008 Green Business Award at this year’s Annual Chamber Dinner.

Chester County Green Business Award winners are chosen by the Chamber’s Business Advisory Recycling Committee. The committee includes private and public sector representatives who meet regularly to promote recycling in businesses and institutions providing education and encouraging municipalities to promote recycling efforts.

Winners of the Green Award have consistently shown that their practices, which go well beyond recycling, represent substantial financial savings as well as environmental benefits. Recycling is no longer “just the nice thing to do.”

For All4 Inc. recycling was a priority when this small business began with 5 members and become a “way of life” as they have grown to a 27 member team of employees. This passionate air quality environmental consulting company has gone beyond the common paper and container recycling program, office equipment and maintenance recycling.

They have expanded their focus to include pollution prevention measures and carbon footprint reduction. They promote the use of hybrid vehicles, car pooling and telecommuting as pollution prevention techniques and have made the switch from bottled waster to an in-line water filtration system. All4 has purchased a “Kill-A-Watt” meter for both office and home use that helps employees understand how their habits contribute to the All4’s carbon footprint. All4 will be carbon neutral as a company. '

All4 understands the importance of purchasing eco-friendly post-consumer products and buys products made from recycled content. Their promotion of sustainability, the interactive waste prevention in-house training program and their “Adopt-a-Highway” community service commitment makes All4 Inc. a winner. Accepting the award for All4 Inc. was Dan Holland, Principal.

Dansko, Inc., represented by COEE Peter Kjellerup, is a wholesale footwear distribution business located in West Grove. Its new headquarters has been submitted to the U.S. Green Building Council for LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) accreditation. You know that Dansko, Inc. takes its environmental impact seriously as soon as you enter their front door and the “living wall.”

Dansko started a community drop-off recycling center at its facility and even recycled 80 percent of its own construction waste. Dansko supports an employee “Green Team” whose members are permitted to take field trips, stay abreast of environmental opportunities, and become subject matter experts who regularly update staff on best practices during monthly meetings and in-house training.

Hard to dispose of or hard to recycle items are accepted from employees households and incorporated into the company collection. “It must be easy” is the philosophy but it is total commitment and “employee direction” that makes Dansko, Inc. a model for other corporations to follow.

“Top down commitment”, “making it easy” and promoting “sustainability” to ensuresuccess in all business climates, are the success factors that continue to be shared by all past and present winners of this award.

The Chamber and the County anticipate honoring Green Businesses at next year’s Annual Dinner. To apply for a Green Business Award, call 610-273-3771 ext. 228.
