PA Resources Council Announces Lens on Litter Photo Contest Winners

The Pennsylvania Resources Council announced the winners of its annual "Lens on Litter" photo contest. The winning photos, received from all over the state.
 
The objective of the contest is to focus public attention on the problems of litter. Besides being unsightly, litter attracts rodents and insects that carry and spread disease. In addition, farm animals, pets and wildlife often ingest poisonous matter and harmful items.
Contest entries were placed into two categories – school children and adults. Judging was conducted at PRC’s Environmental Living Center in Newtown Square, Delaware County.
 
In the “School Children Category,” the winner of the $1,000 first place cash prize was 17-year-old Alexander Rothera of Springfield. His photo, “Too Much Tin in Tinicum”, was taken at the Tinicun Wildlife Refuge. The photo at left depicts discarded cans floating in the water at the Refuge.
 
The judges awarded the second place prize of $500 to Kristen Miller a 12-year-old seventh grader from Harrison City. Her photo “No Victory Party for the Environment” was taken at Penn Township’s Murray Park in Westmoreland County.
 
The winner of the third place prize of $250 was Ian Moore, a 12-year-old from Norwood. Ian is a student at the Norwood Middle School. His photo, “Pop Goes the Litter,” was taken at FDR Park in Philadelphia.
 
Evan Palmieri, a sixth grader at the Media Providence Friends School, won The Peoples Choice Award of a digital camera. His photo “A Working Mess” was taken at 60 Walnut St. in Marcus Hook.
 
The winner of the $1,000 First Place cash prize in the “Adult Category” was L. Womack of Greensburg. Her photo was titled “A Cleaner Pennsylvania – It Shouldn’t Be a Pipe Dream” was taken at Lightcap Road in Latrobe.
 
Karen Cole of Tunkhannock was awarded the second place prize of $500. His photo, “Corn Crib Turned Trash Bin” was taken at Sunnyside Road in Tunkhannock. The judges awarded third place ($250) to Regina Markle of Jacobus for her photo “And Yet They Sing for the Beauty of the Earth.” Her photo was taken at Lake Redman.
 
Julianna Jablonski of Milton won the Peoples Choice Award of a digital camera. “McLaziness to Go” was the title of Ms. Jablonski’s photo.
 
Sponsors of Lens On Litter 2008 were AAA Mid-Atlantic Inc. The Hershey Co. and Wawa Inc. PRC encourages all school students and adults to enter the 2009 Lens On Litter contest, which is already open for entries and which closes October 31.
 
Winners will be posted on the PRC website.
