On The Governor's Desk

These environmental bills of interest were passed by both the House and Senate and now go to the Governor for his action--

Prescribed Burning: House Bill 262 (Haluska-D-Cambria) setting standards for prescribed burning practice was signed into law by the Governor as Act 17.

"Controlled burning is used widely as an effective land and habitat management tool in many states already," Rep. Haluska said. "It is effective because it is based on the way nature itself manages habit and land. Unfortunately, Pennsylvania is way behind in this area. This new law puts the full potential of this important land-management tool at the state's disposal, while still ensuring the safety and protection of property and lives."

Capital Greenbelt: Senate Bill 54 (Piccola-R-Dauphin) which would establish a permanent easement to protect the Capital Greenbelt trail on the former State Hospital grounds in Harrisburg was signed into law as Act 21.

Appalachian Trail: House Bill 263 (Freeman-D-Lehigh) providing additional protection for the Appalachian Trail through local zoning ordinances was signed into law as Act 23.
