Dickinson College Named To Green Honor Roll
Dickinson College has been named to the Princeton Review's "Green Honor Roll," for sustainable practices. The Carlisle institution is one of 15 colleges to receive a rating of 99 out of of 100 points, along with Harvard, Yale, and Evergreen State College of Washington.

Dickinson's efforts were boosted by a $1.4 million grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation in 2008. That helped the school boost environmental programs and practices. A new Center for Environmental and Sustainability Education helps integrate sustainability across the college curriculum.

The Green Honor Roll singled out Dickinson for featuring a "wide variety of vegetarian, vegan, fair trade and organically certified options in its four dining facilities," and sending "800 pounds of organic material and compostable tableware." i.e., no more Styrofoam, to its organic farm every week. Students also collect used fryer oil to produce 1,500 gallons of biodiesel annually for use in the college's trash truck, lawn mowers, farm equipment and even the president's car.

The program also promotes civic engagement in the local community and globally. "This year, students helped Carlisle Borough audit its greenhouse gas emissions and created a storm water education program," says Dickinson spokeswoman Christine Dugan. Other students traveled to Thailand with Earth Rights International, instructing Burmese nationals in methods to monitor water quality.

Sierra Club's "Cool Schools" also named Dickinson as a model of sustainability, while Sustainable Endowments Institute's green report card also highlighted the college, which enrolls 2,300.
