Students, Teachers Invited To Camp Kestrel Wildflower Walk September 26
Northeast Educational Intermediate Unit 19 and Alliance Landfill, Lackawanna County, will present the first Camp Kestrel Wildflower Walk September 26 from 9 to 11 a.m. at the landfill.

The event is being presented for students and teachers from across the region whose classes are working on wildflower and leaf identification projects.

The walk will turn Alliance’s experimental Community Landscape Project into a classroom in the community where students will be able to collect leaves and flowers from the wide variety of native trees, shrubs and meadow plants growing on the landfill’s cap.

Alliance’s Camp Kestrel Habitat Workshop programs have provided more than 6,000 environmental education hours to nearly 2,100 campers since 2004.

The camp was named the Wildlife Habitat Council’s 2008 Corporate Lands for Learning Project of the Year. The award recognized camp programs for their educational value, relevance to wildlife habitat and biodiversity protection, its promotion of investigation and critical thinking, the volunteer support that contributes to the camp, and the camp’s community partners.

The Camp Kestrel Wildflower Walk is being offered free of charge but reservations are recommended and can be made by contacting Mr. Hambrose at 570-562-1600 ext. 244.
