State Contract For Centre County Mine Reclamation Project Announced

Rep. Mike Hanna (D-Centre) this week announced the Department of Environmental Protection has awarded a $188,975 contract for work on the abandoned mine land reclamation project located in Curtin Township, Centre County.
Rep. Hanna said Morgan's Excavating of Mount Union in Huntington County was awarded the project and will begin work on the project next month. The full project involves mobilization and demobilization, clearing and grubbing, grading, subsurface drain, tree-planting and seeding, and is expected to be completed in July 2011.
Rep. Hanna said DEP awards these contracts across the state under programs to address the most dangerous mine sites and in some cases allow modern coal mining companies to clean up historic messes at no cost to state government.
"Abandoned mine sites create public safety hazards that endanger lives, hurt property values and limit economic opportunities in many areas of the state," Rep. Hanna said. "It is wise to use these resources to find innovative and cost-effective ways to clean up these sites and return the lands to useful condition."
According to DEP, Pennsylvania has approximately 180,000 acres of abandoned mine lands dating back to when coal mining began in the state in the 1700s.
