DEP: Marcellus Shale Drillers With Bad Compliance Records Will Get No More Permits

Department of Environmental Protection Secretary John Hanger this week told the Tribune Review Marcellus Shale drilling companies with bad compliance records run the risk of not getting permits to drill new wells.

The comments come on the heels of a report by the PA Land Trust Association showing a total of 1,435 violations of state Oil and Gas Laws due to gas drilling or other earth disturbance activities related to natural gas extraction from the Marcellus Shale in a two and a half year period.
Secretary Hanger said companies on his "watch list" include: Chief Oil & Gas, Citrus Energy and EPG Resources (the company with the June 3 well blowout in Clearfield County.
The newspaper quoted Secretary Hanger as saying, "There comes a point where the people of this state will lose patience with particular companies that demonstrate they cannot operate at the level of their peers. It's paying attention to details, being careful and being respectful of our rules."
