National Trout Unlimited Conservation Awards To Deb Nardone, Valley Forge Chapter

The national Trout Unlimited organization recently recognized the Valley Forge Trout Unlimited Chapter and Deb Nardone, former Director of the Coldwater Heritage Partnership, with National Conservation Awards.
Conservation Professional Award: Deb Nardone's primary role is to manage the Coldwater Heritage Partnership program.  The purpose of this partnership is to provide small grants to watershed organizations, including Trout Unlimited chapters, to assess Pennsylvania's high quality and exceptional value streams.
She established a partnership between the Fish and Boat Commission and Department of Education to ensure the program meets the curriculum needs for teachers in the state's public schools.
Deb made significant contributions in developing the white paper, Gas Drilling in the Marcellus Shale and Pennsylvania's Coldwater Resources, and has been the PA Council of Trout Unlimited spokesperson at many Marcellus Shale conferences and meetings.
She recently spearheaded the effort to start the Pennsylvania Council's Coldwater Conservation Corps, a grassroots effort by TU members who will receive training to monitor environmental conditions adjacent to gas well sites and act as watchdogs on the gas extraction industry.
Silver Trout Award: The Valley Forge Chapter of Trout Unlimited is leading the way by implementing pilot projects to demonstrate that a watershed that is 25 percent covered with impervious surfaces can be restored.
According to hydrology and fisheries experts, a 10 percent impervious surface is the tipping point in any watershed, whereby the system becomes so altered that water resources values are lost.
For example, Crabby Creek directly benefited from Valley Forge's volunteers when they installed 22 habitat structures, planted habitat alongside the stream and relocated wild brook trout from a stream in the same river drainage.
