PA Campaign For Clean Water Urges Caution In Weakening Riparian Buffer Rules

The PA Campaign for Clean Water this week wrote to the Department of Environmental Protection urging the agency not to weaken or eliminate provisions in Chapter 102 requiring the installation of riparian buffers with development in Exceptional Value and High Quality watersheds.
The letter said in part, "We are increasingly aware of advocacy efforts by a small group of individuals and organizations to weaken or eliminate this effective, and necessary, buffer language. The improvements to Chapter 102 were adopted with resounding support from citizens, practitioners, regulators, the Department of Environmental Protection and the Independent Regulatory Review Commission." The groups noted riparian buffers have a variety of benefits, including: keeping drinking water safe, moderating the risk of flood damage, increasing property values, improving water quality, reducing stormwater management costs and supporting tourism and recreation.
The groups signing the letter include: Chesapeake Bay Foundation, American Rivers Clean Water Program-PA, Delaware Riverkeeper Network, Clean Water Action, GreenTreks Network, Lackawanna River Corridor Association, Little Lehigh Watershed Coalition, PA Environmental Defense Fund, PA Council of Trout Unlimited, SE PA League of Women Voters and others.
