Federal Office Of Surface Mining Recognizes Luzerne County Reclamation Project

The Federal Office of Surface Mining recently announced the winners of the 2011 Abandoned Mine Land Reclamation and Excellence in Surface Mining Awards. The winners include the Newport North Reclamation Project in Luzerne County.
The Newport North Project was one of the Abandoned Mine Land Reclamation Award winners which recognize outstanding abandoned mine land reclamation in the United States and showcase exemplary reclamation techniques.
Only projects funded wholly or in part and completed by approved state or tribal regulatory programs are eligible to win.  A panel of judges composed of directors of state reclamation programs and OSM managers vote to determine the winners.
OSM will profile each project’s exemplary works in a short video presentation and present each award at a banquet as part of the National Association of Abandoned Mine Land Programs Association’s annual conference.
This year’s NAAMLP conference will be held in Olympic Valley, October 9-12, 2011, with the awards banquet occurring on October 10.
