House Dems Look At Marcellus Shale Air Quality Issues

The House Democratic Policy Committee held a public hearing Wednesday at Delaware County Community College to hear from environmental and industry experts regarding risks to air quality resulting from drilling in the state's Marcellus Shale formation, said Chairman Mike Sturla (D-Lancaster).
Rep. Greg Vitali (D-Delaware) requested the hearing and served as its co-chairman.
"The more engaged the Commonwealth becomes in the natural gas drilling industry, the more we are discovering the pros and cons of the drilling," Rep. Sturla said. "While southeast Pennsylvania is not home to gas wells, Representative Vitali has been a leader in the legislature on this issue and has done a tremendous job of keeping his constituents informed."
"Air quality is a growing concern as Marcellus drilling expands across the state," said Rep. Vitali. "The purpose of this hearing was to examine the extent of air pollution associated with drilling and what steps need to be taken to address that."
Those testifying at the hearing included: John Hanger, former secretary, Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection; Joe Osborne, legal director, Group Against Smog and Pollution; Kevin Stewart, director of environmental health, American Lung Association of Pennsylvania; Jay Duffy, staff attorney and Marcellus Shale coordinator, Clean Air Council; Andrew Paterson, executive vice president of technical affairs, Marcellus Shale Coalition; Carla Suszkowski, director of regulatory policy, Range Resources; and George Jugovic, former Southwest regional director, Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.
