PEC Launches New Website On Point State Park Portal Bridge Design

The PA Environmental Council this week launched the Portal to the Point: A Design Ideas Exploration is an Idea Generation Project funded by Colcom Foundation of Pittsburgh and coordinated by SPRINGBOARD Design
            “The portal bridge is a blank canvas that represents a fantastic opportunity for Pittsburgh,” said Davitt Woodwell, executive vice president for the Pennsylvania Environmental Council.  “We often can’t see the forest for the trees when we look at something every day, but letting these design teams imagine what the portal bridge could be is a great way to begin a conversation about the future in terms we’ve never thought of before.”
            On view here is the work of five multidisciplinary teams from across the United States who were invited to explore ideas relating to the form, function, artistic elements, and interpretative design of Point State Park’s Portal Bridge and its immediate vicinity.
            The Portal Bridge is an elevated highway thoroughfare that bisects the park north to south and leads to bridges that span the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers. The focus of this project is the space underneath this overpass (a dramatic modernist space) and a deliberately undefined area of the park surrounding the portal.
            Point State Park  has a long, celebrated, and, at times, contentious history. The most visible landmark in Pittsburgh and the subject of countless photographs, it is a place of paramount importance to the history of the United States.
            Today, Point State Park is the city’s focal point for recreation, celebration, and enjoyment, the site of festivals, concerts, and regattas. What will the next generation make of Point State Park?
            The selection of the five creative teams was made from an ambitious list of architects, landscape architects, designers, and artists invited to submit their qualifications.
            Displays of all five concepts can also be viewed in person at the following locations:
-- November: SPRINGBOARD Design, 24 Terminal Way, Pittsburgh, Hours: Open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays;
-- Early December: Fort Pitt Museum, located in historic Point State Park in downtown Pittsburgh, Hours:  Open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily; and
-- Late December to Early January 2012: Heinz History Center, 1212 Smallman Street, Pittsburgh, Hours:  Open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
            An Advisory Committee of architects, artists, educators, and CEOs, as well as key stakeholders, reviewed submitted letters of interest and made selection recommendations.
