Plains Twp Unveils New Recycling Truck Fueled By Natural Gas

Sen. John Yudichak (D-Luzerne) joined officials from the Department of Environmental Protection, members of the Plains Township Board of Commissioners, and UGI Utilities Friday as the township unveiled a new $180,000 recycling truck that runs completely on natural gas.
The township purchased the truck with help of a $149,000 grant from DEP.
"This truck represents a cost effective investment of state dollars that will save Plains Township thousands of dollars in fuel costs for years to come," said Sen. Yudichak. "As the Democratic Chairman of the Senate Environmental and Energy Resources Committee, I'm also pleased to see the township take the initiative to secure a vehicle that also reduces emissions and allows for a more efficient collection of recycling materials."
The truck runs on Marcellus Shale Natural Gas from UGI. The utility also helped install a natural gas refilling station at the township DPW Garage. Plains officials expect to see considerable savings on fuel. A cost comparison shows the approximate price for a gallon of natural gas is $1.50 a gallon versus more than $4.00 a gallon for diesel fuel.
The availability of natural gas also allowed the township to convert the DPW Garage heating system to natural gas resulting in additional cost savings.
The township secured the grant in 2010 and then began the process to have the truck designed and built. It is the first truck of its kind put into service in the region.
