The PA Recreation and Park Society Monday presented Sen. Joseph Scarnati  (R-Jefferson) with its Governmental Award in recognition of his leadership and contributions in protecting and enhancing the Commonwealth’s parks and natural resources.

“Sen. Scarnati is a leader in working to ensure funding for parks and open space,” said Karen Burke, PRPS executive director. “He is a champion of the Pennsylvania Growing Greener program and fought hard to make sure a portion of the revenues from Act 13 were dedicated toward conservation and recreation.”

Sen. Scarnati also led efforts to stop cuts to the Keystone Recreation, Park and Conservation Fund program in the 2012-13 state budget.

Additionally, his work has helped secure more than $12.5 million in conservation grants for his district since 2003, including $1.3 million in 2012 alone.

“I am honored to accept this award from the Pennsylvania Recreation and Park Society,” Sen. Scarnati said. “Our parks and open spaces are tremendous assets to our local communities. Not only do they attract visitors and boost our local economy, but they also add to our quality of life and help protect our natural resources for future generations.”
