Penn State Extension Teaches Inspectors About Private Water Supplies

Penn State Extension Water Specialist, Bryan Swistock, and Extension Educators, Jim Clark and Diane Oleson met with the Association of State Home Inspectors early in May to teach them about private water supplies.

The conference was held in Grantville, Pennsylvania, and the extension personnel instructed on private water system construction basics, water testing and interpretation, and treatment solutions for common water system problems.

The majority of home inspectors stated they each interacted with 25 to 50 homeowners on private water supplies during a year.  Seventeen (71 percent) of the 24 inspectors who completed a post survey stated they learned a great deal of new information at the seminar.

Many of the inspectors are required to obtain continuing education credits for their profession, which the workshop provided. The inspectors were pleased to obtain the resources and information on private water supplies that Penn State Extension could provide.
