Weis Markets Pledges To Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions 20 Percent By 2020

In conjunction with America Recycles Day on November 15, Sunbury-based Weis Markets and its 18,000 associates pledged to reduce the company’s greenhouse gas emissions 20 percent by the year 2020.

Weis Markets is asking all of its associates to sign the “20 percent by 2020” pledge, acknowledging the company is committed to sustainability practices that minimize its impact on the environment.

With the pledge, the company hopes to increase its recycling rate by five percent each year with a goal of zero waste; reduce energy usage by two percent each year and replace 50 percent of its tractor fleet with cleaner fuel vehicles within three years.  Weis Markets currently boasts a 52 percent recycling rate.

“We are confident that the steps we are taking today will continue to minimize our impact on the environment,” said Patti Olenick, sustainability manager.  “We continue to adopt sustainable practices that will help us reach the goal of reducing our greenhouse gas emissions by at least 20 percent over the next five years.”
