Municipal leaders and sustainability professionals from across the Commonwealth, gathered in State College Tuesday for the PA Municipal League’s first Sustainable Pennsylvania: Developing Strategies for Vibrant Communities Conference.

Attendees discussed the creation of sustainable policies and strategies, learned about the components and benefits of certification through Sustainable PA, and found out how to get involved.

Municipalities who have achieved certification also shared their successes with the group.

The free, one-day conference was attended by municipal managers, elected/appointed officials, parks and recreation staff, and corporate and municipal sustainability professionals interested in collaborating to create a more sustainable Pennsylvania.

“Our first-ever Sustainable PA Conference was a resounding success,” said PML Executive Director Richard J. Schuettler. “We look forward to furthering the reach of this program and enhancing the quality of life in our communities across the Commonwealth.”

Topics at the conference included: Why Sustainable PA; Livable Lebanon; Environmental Stewardship; Healthy Communities; and Municipal Energy Use.

The Sustainable Pennsylvania Community Certification program is an online certification system that provides a structure and performance platform for recognition of municipalities as they embrace innovative sustainable policies and programs.

Sustainable PA is administered by the PA Municipal League  which represents cities, townships, town, boroughs and home rule municipalities that share PML’s municipal policy interests.
