Water Wiser Kids Program Debuts Aug. 19 At Cherry Valley National Wildlife Refuge Monroe County

The Cherry Valley National Wildlife Refuge near Stroudsburg in Monroe County will host a Water Wiser Kids Program on August 19 starting at 10:30 a.m.

There is a whole beautiful world to be enjoyed in the freshwater of Cherry Creek in Cherry Valley National Wildlife Refuge. Brittney Coleman, water educator at Kettle Creek Environmental Center, will lead a creek snorkeling expedition for children.

With a creek snorkel, flotation device and guidance from Coleman, elementary-age kids and their families have a chance to enter a world that is as fascinating as a rain forest, see it up close and learn a little about the creatures who live there.

“You don’t have to go to some exotic tropical reef. Kids have a blast and learn a lot” right here while creek-snorkeling, Coleman says.

Along the way, kids will learn about which plants and critters in creeks can’t stand pollution, and why. They’ll hear about the food chain, from the tiny caddis fly to weasels and river otters. They’ll see sunlight in water from a fish’s perspective and find out what a fish’s life is like – all in the natural world of the Poconos.

Meet at Cherry Valley National Wildlife Refuge off Cherry Valley Road, south of Stroudsburg. Take Route 191 south past the Stroudsmoor resort. At the bottom of the hill, go left on Cherry Valley Road. At Croasdale Road, go right to parking for the refuge.

The Water Wiser Kids program is hosted by Brodhead Watershed Association and Kettle Creek Environmental Center. The series is supported by a grant from the Dr. Claus Jordan Endowment Grant, part of the Lehigh Valley Health Network Pocono Foundation.

The event is free, but registration is required and limited to 20 children. Please register by 5 p.m. August 18.  Call 570-839-1120 or 570-629-2727 or send email to: info@brodheadwatershed.org
