DEP Allows Mariner East 2 Pipeline To Resume Construction In Chester County; PUC OK Still Needed

The Department of Environmental Protection Thursday announced it has completed its review of requests for modifications to Chapter 102 (Erosion and Sediment Control) and Chapter 105 (Water Obstructions and Encroachments) permits submitted by Sunoco Pipeline, LP (SPLP) for parts of the Mariner East 2 Pipeline.

The requests are for two sites in West Whiteland Township, Chester County.

The pipeline still needs the go ahead from the Public Utility Commission to actually resume construction.

SPLP’s proposed modifications are a result of its re-evaluation of the original plan to conduct Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD). SPLP has proposed to change methodology from HDD to conventional bore for one drill site, and from HDD to a combination of conventional bore, open trench and HDD for the other drill.

As a result of the changed methodology, potential impacts to a public water supply well, other water resources and sensitive areas are expected to be avoided.

“These approvals have undergone substantial and thorough reviews by technical staff, with careful consideration given to the significant public input received during the extended comment period and public hearing held this past spring,” said DEP Secretary Patrick McDonnell.

More detailed information regarding these modifications, including the amended permits and comment response document, can be found on DEP’s Mariner East 2 Pipeline webpage.
