The Pike County Conservation District is now accepting entries to its Student Conservation Poetry Contest for students in grades 6 to 8.  The deadline for entries is November 15.

A love for nature has been the inspiration for some of the world’s most beloved poets. Many of the poets famous for their nature themed writing were also outspoken about environmental issues.

Writers such as John Muir, Judith Wright, and Henry David Thoreau used poetry as a platform to inspire their readers to take part in environmental conservation.

Conservation is the responsible stewardship of the environment to preserve natural ecosystems while insuring that balanced consideration is also given to human needs for production and recreation.

All poems must have a theme of conservation. Potential topics include soil, water, and wildlife conservation.

Submissions will be accepted from students attending Wallenpaupack, Delaware Valley, East Stroudsburg North or home schools in Pike County. All forms of poetry will be accepted, and there is no length requirement or limit.

Poems can be submitted via email by teachers to: pikecd@pikepa.org with the subject “Pike County Conservation District Poetry Contest.”

The top three writers will present their poems at the December Pike County Conservation District Board Meeting on December 16 at 9:00 a.m., and receive a gift certificate for up to $100.00 at Alice’s Wonderland.
