PRC To Hold 23 Backyard Composting, Rain Barrel & Recycling Workshops In Allegheny County

On February 13, the PA Resources Council announced its Spring schedule of 23 backyard composting, rain barrel and recycling workshops to be held in Allegheny County.

Backyard Composting Workshops

Learn the benefits of backyard composting, including the overall process, methods for setting up a compost pile, proper maintenance and ways to use finished compost. 

Course fee includes instruction plus a FreeGarden EARTH compost bin, which features an 82-gallon capacity ideal for both urban and suburban settings. 

Cost: $70 per person ($75 per couple) and includes one composting bin.  Pre-registration is required.

-- March 13, from 6:30 – 8 p.m., Blueberry Hill Park, Franklin Park Borough

-- March 21, from 10:30 a.m. – Noon, Construction Junction, Point Breeze

-- March 25, from 7 – 8:30 p.m. Phipps Garden Center in Mellon Park

-- April 8, from 6:30 – 8 p.m., East End Food Coop, Point Breeze

-- April 26, from 1 – 2 p.m., Mt. Lebanon Earth Day

-- April 26, from 6:30 – 8 p.m., North Park, Rose Barn

-- May 5, from 6:30 – 8 p.m., Green Tree Municipal Building

-- May 6, from 6:30 – 8 p.m., REI Pittsburgh, South Side

-- May 9, from Noon – 1:30 p.m., Ross Township Community Center

-- May 19, from 6:30 – 8 p.m., West View HUB

-- May 23, from 10:30 a.m. – Noon, Lauri Ann West Community Center, O’Hara Township

-- May 28, from 7 – 8:30 p.m., REI Settler’s Ridge, Robinson Township

-- June 16, from 6:30 – 8 p.m., UPMC Passavant, McCandless

Rain Barrel Workshops

Discover how to harvest rainwater from your roof, store it in a barrel and use it in the landscape.  Learn about problems associated with stormwater runoff and techniques to reduce your contribution to watershed pollution.

Course fee includes instruction plus a FreeGarden RAIN 55-gallon easy-to-install rain barrel.

Cost:  $80 per person ($85 per couple) and includes one rain barrel.  Pre-registration is required.

-- April 16, from 6:30 – 8 p.m., North Park, Rose Barn

-- April 18, from 10:30 a.m. – Noon, Lauri Ann West Community Center, O’Hara Township

Recycling Workshop

The Recycling Awareness Workshop will be held April 23 from 7 - 8 p.m. at REI Pittsburgh, South Side

It’s time to talk “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Refuse!” 

PRC’s Recycling Awareness Program shares answers to common questions surrounding recycling in southwestern Pennsylvania such as:  Lids on? Lids off? Rinse? Wash? Labels on? Labels off? Which plastics are acceptable? What about a window? Broken plastic toys? Electronics? Tires? Plastic bags? Polystyrene? Appliances? Textiles?

What materials are accepted curbside? What about hard-to-recycle items and household hazardous waste? Unwanted pharmaceuticals? Organic debris?
