Gov. Wolf: Planting A Tree, Vegetables, Native Plants Will Give Us Hope
Photo

Gov.  Wolf-- The very act of planting a tree, vegetable seeds or native plants is an expression of confidence in the future and an act of hope.

Hope and confidence are what people today need.  They need to believe the future will be better than it is today.

They need to know we will again bloom and prosper.

Penn State Master Gardeners Larry and Lisa Campbell this week touted the many benefits of gardening like getting outside, getting a nice dose of vitamin D, decreasing your stress levels and experiencing a more positive mood.

It’s also a great way to get some exercise by digging a new garden, planting trees and bushes or flowers.

During World War I and II everyone had a Victory Garden to not only grow a little of their own food, but also to give them a way to feel like they are doing something for the war effort.

Today we need a Victory Over COVID-19 Garden.

Our grandchildren love to garden!  Although our garden is small, it gives them a sense of accomplishment and they learn food doesn’t come from a grocery store.

Reopen Garden Centers

Gov. Wolf, the current shutdown order has kept independent greenhouses and garden centers we go to for plants and seeds closed.

I would encourage you to let independent greenhouses and garden centers reopen, not just for curbside sales, but let people inside, under appropriate restrictions, to pick out their own symbols of hope.

Our granddaughters have our garden all ready for planting.

They need and we need a sense of normalcy.

Consider reopening the independent greenhouses and garden centers so we can have a little of that hope and confidence in the future.
