PA Resources Council Launches Western PA Traveling Glass Recycling Bin Program In June

In June, the PA Resources Council will launch a Traveling Glass Recycling Bin Program to serve residents living in municipalities no longer accepting glass in curbside recycling collection.

This weeklong service, which is free to residents, will rotate through a variety of locations in western Pennsylvania.

The bin’s first appearance – hosted by Hampton Township in Allegheny County and Rep. Lori Mizgorski – will take place June 6 – 11 at the Hampton Community Swimming Pool.

The second week will be held June 13-18 to City of Hermitage Fire Station #3, Route 418 and Maple Drive in Mercer County.

“This pilot program expands PRC’s current glass recycling collection opportunities by providing residents with a safe method for recycling glass while eliminating the need to interact with other individuals or touch shared surfaces,” according to PRC Environmental Program Coordinator Ashley DiGregorio.  “Self-serve glass drop off will be available during daylight hours on a weekly basis from Saturday through Thursday, and bin sites will be strictly monitored at all times.”

Individuals can drop off glass bottles, jars, and jugs of all colors (no color sorting required).  Containers should be empty and rinsed, with lids and labels still on.  Bags and boxes used to deliver glass must be discarded off-site.

“Last year PRC hosted a series of successful pop-up glass collection events, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we’re modifying the program this year to become a nearly contactless process,” said DiGregorio.  “Advantages of the new model include providing residents with six continuous days to visit the drop off location and an opportunity for PRC to schedule mobile glass collection year round.”

PRC’s Traveling Glass Recycling Bin Program is sponsored by Owen-Illinois, Inc., CAP Glass and Straub Brewery.
