The Guardian: One Of The Worst Global Methane Leaks In 2022 Was In PA - Equitrans In Cambria County; Routine Abandonment, Non-Compliance Of Conventional Gas Wells

On March 6, The Guardian published a two-part series revealing the 1,000 worst super-emitting methane leaks around the world in 2022 that are increasing the risk of triggering climate tipping points. They were mostly from oil and gas facilities.

The second article of the series focused on oil and gas facility leaks in Pennsylvania, including the Equitrans underground natural gas storage area leak in November of an estimated one billion cubic feet of natural gas in Cambria County, one of the worst ever detected in the U.S. The Guardian said.

The Guardian identified Marcellus Shale gas development as the “world’s second-biggest methane bomb.”

The Guardian article on Pennsylvania, reported by Nina Lakhani, also pointed to problems with the Mariner East 2 Pipeline, lack of DEP staff and resources to regulate the total extent of natural gas infrastructure spread across Pennsylvania’s landscape and the “culture of non-compliance” within the conventional oil and gas industry, in particular related to routine abandonment of oil and gas wells.

The article on Pennsylvania also highlights the lack of tough laws, regulations and penalties to prevent environmental problems, including inadequate well plugging bonds.

Meanwhile, the article said, the natural gas industry is pushing for further deregulation.
