* Clean Water Referendum - PA Fair Share For Clean Water Coalition: Vote Yes! For Clean Water Nov. 4
The PA Fair Share For Clean Water Coalition this week said Pennsylvania voters have the opportunity to do their fair share to help clean up Pennsylvania rivers and streams by supporting the Clean Water referendum on the November 4 general election ballot.

* Environmental Legislative Accomplishments For 2008, More Than You Think
The General Assembly and Gov. Rendell cooperated this year on several major pieces of environmental legislation dealing with water infrastructure funding, deep mine safety, alternative and renewable energy, energy conservation, protecting the Great Lakes, developing a climate plan for Pennsylvania and establishing the PA Center for Environmental Education in law.
* Environmental Issues Leftover For 2009
While 2008 was a productive year in terms of environmental legislation, there were major issues not addressed before the General Assembly left town. They include:
* EPA Recognizes Southwest Household Hazardous Waste Task Force With President's Award
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Regional Administrator Donald S. Welsh this week honored the Southwestern Pennsylvania Household Hazardous Waste Task Force with the President’s Volunteer Service Award in recognition of the group’s work to organize hazardous waste events in western Pennsylvania.
* Chesapeake Bay Trust Has Fish Habitat, Environmental Education Grants Available
Two grant programs are now available for organizations within theChesapeake Bay Watershed through the Chesapeake Bay Trust and the FishAmerica Foundation:
* Pike, Monroe, Wayne County Stormwater/Flood Summit November 20
On November 20 Pike, Monroe and Wayne counties will hold a Stormwater/Flood Summit to help elected officials and the public better understand stormwater and flooding issues and solutions in these northeast counties.
* Highmark Urges Others To Follow Their Lead And Build Green Roofs
As Pittsburgh struggles to find solutions to its ever-growing energy needs and its continued sewageoverflow into the region's rivers, local businesses can play a role inhelping to save energy, clean the rivers and beautify downtown by building green roofs.
* ClearWater Conservancy Receives Education Grant From Dominion
The Dominion Foundation has given a $2,500 grant to ClearWater Conservancy to help fund the Connections program, a partnership with the Millbrook Marsh Nature Centerin State College, Pa., through which local elementary students learn about watersheds and the environment in a hands-on, outdoor educational setting.

* New Grant Program To Help Combat Illegal Dumping, DEP Supports PA CleanWays
The Department of Environmental Protection this week announced a new grant program to provide communities with the tools and resources they need to restore illegal dump sites and awarded $1 million to PA CleanWays to continue its important mission to cleanup and remediate illegal dump sites in communities throughout the Commonwealth.

* EPA Info-Sharing Forum In Philadelphia To Focus On Issues In Hispanic, Asian Communities
Federal, state, city and non-profit leaders will share information on key environmental issues affecting the Hispanic and Asian communities at an upcoming forum sponsored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s mid-Atlantic region.

* DEP Announces Small Business Energy Efficiency, Waste Reduction Grant Awards
The Department of Environmental Protection this week announced the award of $553,000 in grants to 92 small businesses to help improve energy efficiency and reduce waste under the Small Business Advantage Program.

* Gov. Rendell Announces $280 Million In Federal Funding For Low-Income Energy Assistance
At the 2008 Stay Warm PA Summit this week, Gov. Rendell announced $280 million in low-income energy assistance available as a result of the federal economic bailout bill before more than350 community leaders from across the state.
* PUC Urges Electric, Natural Gas Utilities To Help Consumers 'Prepare Now,' 'Stay Warm'
The Public Utility Commission this week urged electric and natural gas utilities to take extra steps to help consumers "Prepare Now" for the higher costs of winter heating.
* PUC Announces Second Hearing To Discuss Trends In Wholesale Electricity Markets
The Public Utility Commission this week announced it will hold a second special en banc hearing on November 6 to discuss trends in the wholesale electricity markets.
* Energy Coordinating Agency Holds Urban Sustainability, Conservation Is Survival Forums
The Energy Coordinating Agency will hold an Urban Sustainability Forum with the theme "Lights, Carbon, Action: Energy Action Agenda For Buildings In Pennsylvania" on October 23 at the Academy of Natural Sciences and a "Conservation Is Survival" Program on October 24 at the Arch Street Methodist Church, both in Philadelphia.
* PA's Newest Wind Farm In Somerset County Will Produce Clean Energy
Iberdrola Renewables, FirstEnergy Solutions, the PA Energy Development Authority and Gov. Rendell this week dedicated Pennsylvania's newest wind energy projectthat has transformed a former surface coal mine in Somerset County into a source of clean, renewable energy that will protect the environment and benefit Pennsylvania's consumers and economy.
* 2008 PA Wind Energy Symposium At Penn State November 17-18
The 2008 Pennsylvania Wind Energy Symposium: Power For The Future Symposium will be held at Penn State University on November 17-18.
* Penn State Wants To Know, 'What's your 20?'
Penn State is challenging its faculty, staff and students, to reduceelectrical consumption by 2 percent during the My 20 ChallengeWeek of October 19-25.
* Carnegie Mellon University Selected For $900,000 EPA Brownfields Grant
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has selected Carnegie Mellon University to receive an estimated $900,000 grant to help support community revitalization.
* PA Professional Geologists To Hold Underground Storage Tank Town Hall Meetings
The PA Council of Professional Geologists will hold two town hall meetings on October 21 in Pittsburgh and on November 4 in King of Prussiato discuss recent administrative changes in the Underground Storage Tank Program.
* Board Acts To Protect 27 Additional Farms, More Than 2,200 Acres Of Farmland
Farmland in 16 Pennsylvania counties will remain viable for agricultural production thanks to this week's approval of more than 2,200 acres on 27 farms for preservation by the state Farmland Preservation Board, said Agriculture Secretary Dennis Wolff.
* Game Commission Youth Essay Contest Deadline Approaches
Young hunters ages 12 to 16 from throughout Pennsylvania are reminded all entries for the Game Commission's Hunter Education Youth Essay Contest must be postmarked no later than October 31.
* State Bureau of Forestry Urges Safeguards to Protect Woodlands Against Wildfires
With hunting and other outdoors activities increasing at a time when woodlands and brush canbecome tinder dry in just a few days, the state Bureau of Forestry isurging all residents to guard against wildfires in Pennsylvania's 17million acres of forestlands.
* State Historical and Museum Commission Reaches Out To Preserve Communities
The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission will launch a new initiative to help the state's 25 Preserve America communities with historical preservation and heritage tourism development

* Gov. Rendell Makes Appointments To DEP Citizens Advisory Council
Gov. Rendell this week filled two positions on the Department of Environmental Protection's Citizens Advisory Council, the 18-member advisory committee to the agency.

* Bid Opportunity For Cleaning, Plugging Abandoned Wells In McKean County
The Department of Environmental Protection published notice of a bid opportunity for cleaning out and plugging 12 abandoned wells in McKean County.
* Spotlight - PennDOT Celebrates Pennsylvania Archaeology Month
While PennDOT builds and maintains Pennsylvania's roads and bridges, the department also works to discover any history that may be buried beneath them and will celebrate its archaeology efforts next week during Archaeology Month.
* Feature - Squirrels Abound In Pennsylvania's Forests And Woodlots
If there's one game animal that could use some additional attention in Pennsylvania, it's squirrels. Game Commission field officers report squirrel populations are strong in most areas of the state.
